Personal income taxes are usually due on April 15th, although for 2017 the deadline was moved to April 18th. When the 15th falls on the weekend, the deadline is moved to Monday. However, Washington D.C., observes a work holiday for Emancipation Day on April 16, so when this falls on a Sunday, the observation is moved to Monday the 17th. This in turn bumps the tax deadline back one more day to April 18th giving citizens several more days to file—or in some cases procrastinate.
In addition to income taxes, state and counties have imposed their own taxes on its residents. Most state counties have collected property tax on land owners since the early days of the nation. In Westmoreland County, PA many of the township tax records still survive from the early 19th century. One ancestor, James Blackstone, was located in Unity Township for several years in the 1820s. No deeds were ever filed for James indicating he possessed no property, but he apparently owned no livestock either, which was also taxed and recorded in these journals. Although James appears in these tax documents, only the occupation of laborer and a valuation of .06—perhaps a poll tax—is written by his name for the years 1825 and 1829. In 1828 ages were also recorded and he listed as 44 years of age. Below are other extractions of township taxes from Westmoreland County.
